Pat Preston’s practice at McKay Chadwell focuses on civil litigation and criminal defense for clients typically involved in complex cases in federal and state courts.

Pat earned a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University in 1989 with majors in Political Science and English Literature. After graduation, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he served as Legislative Staff Assistant for the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Labor – chaired by Senator Howard M. Metzenbaum of Ohio. The Subcommittee handled significant issues involving the regulation of pension funds, employment discrimination, and passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Pat left a busy life on “the Hill” in 1991 to return to the Midwest and attend law school.

At the Indiana University School of Law, Pat was a member of the Law Review and was elected to the editorial board. As Executive Editor of Notes and Topics, he reviewed scholarly works by professors and students seeking publication. In 1993 he wrote an article on age discrimination published by the Law Review. During a summer internship with the American Civil Liberties Union in New York City, he worked on pretrial litigation for class actions challenging the school conditions of impoverished children in several southern states. The following year, he worked as part of a defense team for a capital punishment habeas petition before the U.S. Supreme Court.

After graduating from law school in 1994, Pat moved to Seattle for a two-year judicial clerkship with U.S. Magistrate Judge David E. Wilson. He served as Chief Magistrate Judge Law Clerk during his final year and gained familiarity with numerous areas of federal law. Pat then joined the Seattle law firm, Keller Rohrback, LLP, as a litigation associate.

Prior to joining McKay Chadwell in 2005, Pat tried numerous felony and misdemeanor cases during more than seven years as a deputy prosecutor for King County Prosecuting Attorney Norm Maleng. Pat handled a variety of criminal cases at all stages of prosecution, from development of charges for complex property crimes, to the preparation and trial of serious crimes of violence. He attended the National Advocacy Center in Columbia, South Carolina. Lastly, he gained significant appellate experience as a deputy prosecutor, and his name appears on several published and unpublished opinions by the Washington appellate courts.

Pat has served as a panelist at the University of Washington School of Law for seminars on judicial clerkships and the criminal justice system. He also has served as a judge for moot court competitions at Seattle University School of Law.

Pat has been a member of the Washington State Bar Association since 1994, and is currently a member of both the Criminal Law and Litigation sections.
