Mike McKay is one of the founding partners of McKay Chadwell, PLLC. With his experience as a former U.S. Attorney, he has established a law practice focusing on commercial litigation, white-collar criminal defense, and corporate and government internal investigations.
As U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Washington in Seattle from 1989 to 1993, McKay supervised the litigation of many prominent lawsuits filed on behalf of or against the United States. It was McKay who decided the charges in the first flag burning case in America, an action granted direct review by the United States Supreme Court. During his tenure, he reorganized the office to more efficiently handle specialized types of cases involving drugs, environmental crime and bank fraud.
In 2008, the Port of Seattle hired McKay to serve as legal counsel for the Special Investigative Committee, which conducted an internal investigation into Port contracting practices. McKay's team issued the Report of the Special Investigative Team on December 3, 2008, which found instances of fraud in the Port's contracting practices and other instances where state laws or Port policies were violated. The Report provided a set of recommendations to improve the Port's practices and Port CEO Tay Yoshitani directed his staff to begin implementing them immediately.
In 1999, the Mayor of Seattle asked McKay to investigate police policies and procedures in the wake of allegations that a police detective stole money from a homicide victim. He served as vice chair of a four-member Citizens Review Panel which made more than twenty recommendations to improve the Seattle Police Department. In January 2008, McKay served on the Seattle Police Accountability Review Panel, which reviewed the 1999 model and made 29 recommendations, all of which were accepted by the Mayor.
McKay has represented numerous corporations and corporate officers facing government investigations. He has supervised corporate and government internal investigations. He has represented a variety of clients in civil matters, including a major asbestos manufacturer facing personal injury actions and the Washington Public Power Supply System bondholders in a $7.5 billion lawsuit against the State of Washington.
McKay was a Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney for King County from 1976 to 1981. He handled cases in the civil, fraud, juvenile and criminal divisions. He represented the Kingdome in the first major litigation with the Seattle Mariners, and he was lead prosecutor in the investigation and prosecution of a juvenile prostitution ring. He played a principal role in the 1978 implementation of the innovative Washington State Juvenile Justice Act.
Mike's interest in public service has led him to work for many local, state and national groups. In 2008, he and his brother, John, were presented with the Charles A. Goldmark Award for Distinguished Service from the Legal Foundation of Washington. He is on the Board of Directors and currently serves as the Vice Chairman for the Legal Services Corporation, after being nominated by President George W. Bush and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 2003. He is a member and former president of the National Association of Former United States Attorneys and a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He was the vice-chair of the U.S. Attorney General's Advisory Committee and vice-chair of the Washington Citizens Commission on Salaries for Elected Officials. He has served on and chaired committees which recommended to Washington's two U.S. Senators and the White House candidates for the federal bench. Mike was also vice-chair of the Review Board that advised the Archbishop of Seattle on clergy molestation allegations.
McKay has run numerous political campaigns. He was Washington State vice-chair of the 1988, 2000, and 2004 Bush campaigns and was co-chair of the Washington State steering committee of the McCain 2008 campaign. He also chaired numerous campaigns for former King County Prosecutor Norm Maleng.
McKay graduated from the University of Washington in 1973 with a B.A. in Political Science, with distinction. He is a 1976 graduate of Creighton University School of Law, where in 2001 he received the Alumni Merit Award. McKay has an A.V. legal rating by Martindale-Hubbell and is listed in "Who's Who in America" and "Who's Who in American Law." Mike has been on the Washington Super Lawyer list every year since 2003. |
