John McKay joined McKay Chadwell as of counsel in October, 2009. His practice is focused on consulting and expert services in law enforcement, national security, white collar investigations, prosecutorial and legal ethics and other matters in both federal and state courts. John holds an appointment as Professor from Practice on the faculty of the Seattle University School of Law where he teaches National Security Law and Constitutional Law of Terrorism, among other courses.

John McKay was appointed by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate as United States Attorney for Western Washington (2001-2007). As U.S. Attorney, he oversaw all federal prosecutions and civil matters involving the U.S. Government in his district. He personally prosecuted several high-profile cases, including the sentencing and appeals of Ahmed Ressam, who was convicted in 2001 on terrorism and explosives charges for plotting to bomb Los Angeles International Airport. In January 2007, the U.S. Navy honored McKay by presenting him with the Distinguished Public Service Award, its highest civilian honor, for his leadership in establishing innovative systems for law information sharing. Along with eight other U.S. Attorneys, John McKay resigned in January, 2007.

Between 1997 and 2001, John served as the President of the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) in Washington, D.C. Congress established the LSC in 1974 as a private, non-profit corporation to ensure equal access to justice under the law for all low-income Americans. His tenure at LSC was characterized by a bipartisan approach to working with Congress, driven by a deeply held commitment to the principle of equal justice.

Prior to his work at LSC, John was a partner at Cairncross & Hempelmann in Seattle, ultimately becoming a managing partner of the firm. From 1989 to 1990, John served as a White House Fellow, where he worked as a Special Assistant to the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C. From 1982-1992 John was a litigation associate and later a partner with Lane Powell, representing such clients as Nordstrom, the Seattle Seahawks and Honeywell. During this time, he was admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.

During his legal career, John McKay has held leadership positions with the American Bar Association and the Washington State Bar Association. He has been a member of both the ABA Board of Governors and House of Delegates, and has served on the Washington State Bar Association's task forces on Opportunities for Minorities in the Legal Profession and on Governance. From 1988 to 1989, he was President of the Washington State Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division. From 1995 to 1996, John served as the Washington State Chairman of the Equal Justice Coalition.

In 1995, the Washington State Bar Association named him Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year, in 2001 he received the Bar Association's Award of Merit, its highest honor, and following his resignation as U.S. Attorney, the 2007 Courageous Award. In 2008, John McKay, along with his brother Mike, was awarded the prestigious Charles A. Goldmark Award for Distinguished Service given by the Legal Foundation of Washington. In 2009, he was honored with the University of Washington Department of Political Science's Distinguished Alumni Award.

John McKay is a Seattle native who grew up on Capitol Hill and attended St. Joseph's Grade School and Seattle Prep High School. McKay attended the University of Washington, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 1978.

After working as an aide to Congressman Joel Pritchard (R-WA) in 1978 -79, Mr. McKay went on to earn his law degree at Creighton University in 1982.
